Introduction:
We think not only that kids should have fun using the computer to learn, but also that they should be encouraged to use the computer as their own creative sandbox to invent their own pictures, lessons, and learning content. With those ideas as our goal, we are very happy to announce that we are expanding our free online program and activity area at our web site and have added new expanded creativity features to our PC software.
Hands-on Learning at the Hungryfrog.com Website:
Right now we are first expanding the free online program area to offer more Java based learning games which you can play with just your browser. You do NOT need to register or submit any information to play the online learning games. Programs available today teach Latin vocabulary, Spanish, French, math arithmetic, time telling, alphabet and other early learning topics. All of these Java based programs are free and available at the website always. You do not need to register, sign-up, or provide any personal information to use the online programs.
In 2006-2007 we will be adding lots of new games and learning topics, but most importantly we want to involve you and your children more in the process (this is the hands-on part!). New software will allow you and your children to create your own learning / teaching materials and share them with others - all in the context of the free online program and activity area at the hungryfrog.com website. Make Your own Game Skins:
The new Windows version 6 Hungryfrog software lets users create their own game ‘skins’ for the Hungryfrog learning games. A fun activity for you and your little ones is to create with them your own picture backgrounds and game sounds. You can work together with your child with any paint or picture editing software (including pictures you take with your digital camera) to make backgrounds which you use in the games - making the games personalized with your own screens. Next use the software to create your own lessons and record sounds to play, and it is like you just created your own PC learning program custom designed just for you.
The Silly Language Game:
One fun hands-on style activity for the Hungryfrog PC software for Windows is to make a ‘just for fun’ game where you make up your own silly language words and define their meanings and then use the Hungryfrog software to learn them. Play against one another to see how fast you can learn your own silly language words! This activity is lots of fun, and even though it may seem just silly, it can help teach a lot about language. For example, if you are a parent, work with your kids to make their own ‘silly language’ but do it by explaining about word roots and concepts of linguistics and language evolution. In the context of a purely fun, play exercise, you can teach an awful lot of ‘boring’ material!
Any of the Hungryfrog.com language programs allow you to do this, because they all let you create your own dictionaries and use your own images and sounds throughout the programs. Whether you are interested in Latin, Greek, French, Spanish, Italian, or German - pick the language which suits you as the starting software program.
